Here's an editorial from a 1938 Elks Magazine lamenting a gallop poll which showed very few of the younger generation engaged in bible reading. Most seemed distracted by all the activities available, like riding an automobile, games and amusements of all kinds and listening to the radio!! Heaven forbid!!

13th Annual Nazareth Children's outing held

We had a grand time entertaining the kids and the counselors from Nazareth on the 25th of June. Lots of fish were caught, most painted there own shirts, all got to ride on a pontoon and a delicious lunch was served. Red bull racing donated a bunch of shirts, hats, flip flops and other items.

Old timer's and PER meeting results

The Lodge held it's annual Old Timer and PER meeting on Feb 3, 2011. Thanks to the house committee for a delicious turkey barbeque supper.

Here's one picture of the Memorial Service. hope someone took others. It was a good service and we had a nice crowd but only one or two that I knew of the departed Brother elks family. Congrats and thanks to the Officer's and house committee for setting up for the service.

Elks memorial Service- Dec 5th 2 p.m.

Mack Herbert Wood

SALISBURY - Mr. Mack Herbert Wood, 89, passed away on Oct. 18, 2010, at the North Carolina Lutheran Home.

He was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Salisbury, the son of the late Thompson Brown Wood and Esther Miller Wood. He was a graduate of Richfield High School and married Carrie Mae Goodman Wood on June 12, 1942.

Most important to him were the times spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his many friends along life journeys. His home was the gathering place for family celebrations with the children and grandchildren.

Mack was the owner of Wood's Auto in Spencer, which he started in 1947 and closed in 1986.

Mack was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was a past president of the James L. Fisher Sunday School Class, a Cub Scout leader and usher for many years. He was an active member of the Elks Club, Rowan Retired Peace Officers Club and Golden Opportunity Club.

Mack was a past member of Salisbury Merchants Association, Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He served as a Salisbury Police Reserve Officer from 1967-1986 and was director of the Police Reserves from 1981-1986. He was also a member of the Salisbury Bass Anglers Sportsman Society since 1969.

He is survived by wife Carrie Mae Goodman Wood; two sons: Tommie Wood and wife Sue and Gary Wood and wife Cathy; one daughter, Yonnie Holland and husband David; four grandchildren: T.J. Wood, Todd Wood, Jesse Holland and Carrie Sipe. Mack was the great-grandfather of Caleb and Taylor Sipe. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma Boulus.

Service and Visitation: A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday (Oct. 21) at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. A private inurnment will precede the service at the St. John's Memorial Garden and Columbarium. The family will receive friends in the Church Library following the Memorial Service.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., Salisbury, NC 28144 or the charity of the donor's choice.

Jack Plummer Safley Obituary:

SALISBURY - Jack Plummer Safley, 81, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at the North Carolina State Veterans Home.

Born July 4, 1929, he was the son of the late Flora Melinda Plummer Safley and David Frank Safley of Salisbury and was a lifelong resident of the city. On March 10, 1957, Mr. Safley married Barbara Ann Carter of Lincolnton.

Mr. Safley was a graduate of Boyden High School and was honored to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his professional career in sales with City Motor Company of Salisbury.

A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. Safley was also an active member of American Legion Post 342 and Salisbury Elks Lodge 699.

Mr. Safley was an avid sports fan and volunteered his services as general manager of the Salisbury American Legion baseball team for 15 years.

In addition to Barbara, his wife of 53 years, Mr. Safley is survived by daughter Anne Elizabeth Safley Bills and her husband, Andy Bills, of High Point; grandchildren Andrew Carter Bills of Charlotte, Elizabeth Asbury Bills and Mary Cullen Bills of High Point; sister Lois Mae Safley Miller of Statesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Service and Visitation: A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 at First United Methodist Church of Salisbury at 217 S. Church St. with the Rev. Stephen Haines officiating. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be sent to the Building Fund at First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church St., Salisbury, NC 28144-4953.

Sept 16th, Lodge meeting review

The lodge held it's regular meeting and welcomed the District Deputy Bob Malpass and his esquire Ron Dixon. We received a good report after their inspection of the lodge books and review of our operating procedures was completed.

We also initiated five new Elks members. Joe Combs, the father and son team of Sam and Hunter Nash and Sandra Moore who is Angela Moore's mother in law. In addition to those mentioned above, are most of the Officer's that were in attendance.

Many thanks to the House committee for the excellent meal they prepared.

We had a busy meeting on the 20th of May.

Four new members were initiated. Gary Swindell, Matthew Vail, Kathleen Boggs and Kevin O'Mellan. Welcome to the lodge!!

Much business about upcoming events was discussed.

Two votes were held. One was on the river park increases for rentals which was approved. The other was a vote to fill Rob Stubbs Trustee position which he resigned from with two years remaining in his term. That was decided in a close election with Steve Vail being elected

Brother Randy Burrows passed away on April 13th

SALISBURY - Randall "Randy" Lee Burrows, 65, of Salisbury, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at his residence.

Born Feb. 18, 1945, in Randolph County, he was the son of the late Faye McCoy Yates and Willie Burrows. He was a graduate of Asheboro High School.

Mr. Burrows was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. A member of the Salisbury Elks Lodge, he retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company as a sales representative.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include Beckie Brown Burrows, whom he married in 1975; sister Debi Burrows Setzer (Tim) of Asheboro; niece Shea Setzer Grosch (Anthony), also of Asheboro; special angels Julie K. Laney and Travis Nicholas; and beloved cat Sweetie.

Visitation: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Friday, April 16 at Bethel United Methodist Church.

Memorial Service: 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Julie McNeil, Dr. Harold Bales and the Rev. Thomas Conder will officiate. Burial will be at Salisbury National Cemetery, with military honors, at a later date.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 2380 Long Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Chris Agner and his staff for the 22 years of special care and kindness to Randy.

New members initiated and several awards presented

At the Lodge meeting on March 18th, John Salonen was presented with a special commendation award for his work with the Veteran's at the Salisbury VA. Also, Steve Vail was presented an award for his outstanding leadership as river park chair. Picture is not shown due to a camera malfunction.

Also that evening, seven brother Elks were initiated. From left to right Debi Davis, Scott DeForrest, Ken Harmer, Brent Hartman, Erin Vinson, Kirk Laps and Bebe Brittain.

It was also the last meeting presided by outgoing ER Bob Sce who is going to be the new Treasurer this coming year. Also "retiring" is Vanessa Eanes as Secretary, Eddy Harwood as Loyal Knight, Jim Hill as Trustee, and Jeff Mills as Lecturing Knight. A hearty hoof clap in appreciation for your service to the Lodge this past year.

Elks Van is still a working

Back in 2004, NC State Elks Association donated this van to the NC Veterans Nursing home. It's still working and helping veterans get to appointments and activities. PER & Old Timers' meeting. Feb 4

The weather appeared to keep many of the Old timers from attending but we still had 40 Elks on hand for this meeting. To the right is a picture of the PER's in attendance (Robert Wall was there but missing from the photo) and Bill and Bruce Brown who are life members.

The Lodge also received a Membership commendation from the Grand Lodge for inducting 12 new Brother Elks for the GER's October class.

DD Clinic at High Point review

A number of us attended the DD clinic in High Point on Sunday, Jan 17. It's a wonderful lodge with 800+ Brother Elks. Basically at DD clinics, reports are given on various programs of the Grand Lodge. Those giving reports from our Lodge for the W/C District included Bob Sce for Fundraising and Govt Relations, Linda Brown for Americanism, Mike Jones for Drug Awareness and John Salonen for Veteran's Service.

Our Order is definitely struggling with membership although these difficult times can offer an opportunity to attract qualified people to join. As for our Grand Lodge programs, the Hoop Shoot program is alive and well with the district and State contests coming up soon. The Veteran's activities that most of the 8 lodges do for the Salisbury VA were lauded and a letter of acknowledgement and thanks was read.

Some of the pictures show the newly revamped downstairs portion of the High Point Lodge. The pool is huge and the large covered shelter looks like a nice place to sit and get out of a hot sun.

Brother Elk Richard Straub passes away Jan 13, 2010

ichard Edward Straub, 73, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Straub was born July 3, 1936, in Pittsburg, Pa., to the late Elizabeth Jennings Straub and Edward J. Straub.

Richard graduated from college with a Chemical engineering degree. He retired from PCS Phosphate. Mr. Straub was a member of the Moose and Elks Lodge and the Shiner's.

Those left to cherish his memory, one son, Timothy Straub of New Bern; one daughter, Linda DeGennaro and husband, Pete of Kaneohe, Hawaii; one sister, Janet S. Combs of St. Charles Mo.; four grandchildren, Karly, Timothy, Melissa Straub and Kyle Kastner; close family friends Frank Holman and family and Keith Davidson and family.

Brother Bill Ward passes away.

John William (Bill) Ward, 75, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Bill was born in Galax, Va. and from the time he entered National Business College in 1951, he was meant to be in the furniture business.

His career began at Johnson Carper Furniture Company in Roanoke, Va. where in 1965, he became the General Manager after the company was acquired by Singer Furniture.

In 1974, he was transferred to Atlanta, Ga., as the Vice-President of Sales for Singer Furniture at its corporate offices.

After leaving Singer, he continued in the furniture industry, serving for a time as a board member of the American Furniture Manufacturers' Association.

For the past 18 years, he served as President of Carter Furniture Company in Salisbury, N.C. He cherished the friends and neighbors he had in Salisbury and considered them a part of his family. Bill was a gregarious story teller, a loyal friend and a loving family man.

He is predeceased by his father and mother, Mr. Emmette and Cecil Ward; and one sister, Rowena Manning.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marie Carey Ward, of Atlanta, Ga.; his son, Stephen Ward and his wife, Julie, of Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Susan Holland and her husband, Randy of Atlanta, Ga. and Anne Marie Rossier and her husband, Ross of Mason, Ohio. His grandchildren were such a special part of his life. They are Dylan, Abby and Desi Holland; Shelby and Tanner Ward and Richard, Jackson and Thomas Rossiter. He is also survived by three sisters, Georgia Webb (Ted), Ann Largin (Montie) and Pat Rollison (John); one brother, Dale Ward; his mother-in-law, Ruth Carey; his brother-in-laws, Jim Carey (Jo), Mike Carey (Dot) and Richard Carey; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 12-2 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home, 1315 W. Innes St. Salisbury, NC 28144.

Services: A Memorial Service celebrating Mr. Ward's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Summersett Memorial Chapel.

A Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Oakland United Methodist Church Cemetery in Galax, Va. at 11 a.m.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Brother Perry Goodman passes away on Dec 29

Perry Gene Goodman

SALISBURY - Perry Gene Goodman, 58, of Salisbury, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack.

Born Sept. 16, 1951, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Louise Turner Goodman and Adam Lamont Goodman, Sr. A graduate of South Rowan High School, Class of 1969, he was a veteran of the United States Marines, serving in Vietnam. Mr. Goodman retired from Army National Guard in 2000 and retired from General Electric in 2007.

He was a member of Elks Lodge, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, VFW Post 3006 and 63rd and 26th Civil War Re-Enactment Groups.

Mr. Goodman was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include Linda Owens Goodman, whom he married Nov. 22, 1992; sons James Kevin Goodman (Caroline) of Hawaii and Brian Nelson Smith (Marie) of Salisbury; daughter Amy Stoner (Jonah) of Mooresville; brothers Jeff Goodman (Connie) of Rocky Mount, Lamont Goodman of South Carolina, Phil Goodman of Florida; and four grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Michael Goodman, Hayden Smith and Lilly Stoner.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2 at Lyerly Funeral Home; and at other times, the family will be at the home at 1910 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury.

Service: 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4 in the James C. Lyerly Chapel with the chaplain for the 63rd officiating. Burial will follow in the Salisbury National Cemetery, with military honors by the 63rd and 26th Civil War Re-Enactment Groups.

Life Member Jay Spencer Bost passes away Dec 18, 2009

Jay Spencer Bost, 94, of Rockwell, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Bost was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Rowan County, son of the late Clarence Alfred Bost and Pearl Harvey Fisher.

He attended Rockwell High School. Mr. Bost was president of Rockwell Radio and Electric Company which was founded in 1922 and closed in 2001.

He was a life long member of Ursinus United Church of Christ, he helped build the church, and he was a Church Trustee Emeritus, member of the Consistory and held all offices.

He served on the Rockwell Town Board for 15 years and was Mayor Pro Tem of Rockwell for 12 years. He was a member of Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge #657 and was a 32 Degree Mason and a member of the Rowan County Shrine Club where he was President twice and Stock Secretary for over 50 years and a volunteer fireman of the Rockwell Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bost is preceded in death by his step-mother, Ann Ridenhour Bost; first wife, Allie Belle Foil Bost, who died on May 16, 1993; brothers, Myron Bost and Hugh Bost.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Polly Bost, whom he married Feb. 4, 1995; daughters, Libby B. Noah and husband, Bill of Winston-Salem and Patricia Fisher of Salisbury; sisters, Jackie B. Taylor and husband, Jack of Rockwell, Marlene Braun and husband, Carl of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren, William Dallas Noah, III and wife, Marsi of Lewisville, Margery Newsome of Winston-Salem, Nena Jones and husband, Jeff of Salisbury, Lesley Shelton and husband Donnie of Raleigh and Jan Ketner and husband Jon of Salisbury; 10 great- grandchildren; step-daughter, Brenda Gray and husband, Tony of Boone; step-grand daughters, Brandy Gray and Kelly Gray; step-great-grandchildren. Holly Aldrege and Brett Aldrege.

Service and Burial: The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21 at Ursinus United Church of Christ, conducted by Rev. Jim Staunton, pastor. Burial will follow at the Ursinus United Church of Christ cemetery. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge #657. The Masons and Shriners will be seated as a group in the church.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or to a charity of the donors' choice.

In other business, the Lodge approved $100 to the Family crisis center. This followed up the $100 each given to Nazareth Childrens home and the ARC Christmas event.

On Jan 21, the lodge will vote on the smoking ban that was proposed at the last meeting of November.

Life Member Al Boulas passes away

SALISBURY - Albert Joseph "Al" Boulus, 86, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 26, 1923, he was the first baby born in the United States in his Lebanese family. He was the son of the late Olga Ferris Boulus and Pete Boulus and was a graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury.

After school he went to work for Pilot Insurance but decided to go into business for himself. In 1950, at the age of 26, he opened Al's Night Hawk and operated it until Feb. 25, 2001, for over 50 years.

Mr. Boulus was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and Moose lodges and was an avid golfer at Corbin Hills Golf Course.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Wood Boulus, whom he married Dec. 24, 1944; a son, Michael Boulus of Raleigh, and his sons, Ian Boulus and Albert Boulus, and a daughter, Sandra Boulus Flowe and husband Dan of Salisbury and their children, Tony Graham of Guyton, Okla., Shai Graham Harley and husband Tom and great-grandchildren Jaelon and Brynn Harley, all of Kansas City, Kan., and granddaughter Jennifer Flowe Blevins and husband Andy of Hickory. A sister, Doris Bernard and husband Don of Charlotte, also survives him.

Services/Visitation: Recitation of the Rosary will be held Thursday night at 6 p.m. followed by a visitation till 9 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on North Fulton Street with entombment to follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Memorials: Can be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 375 Lumen Christ Lane, Salisbury, NC 28147; or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.

Elks Ring the bell for the Salvation Army

ER Bob Sce and Publicity Chair Gail Sce worked for a few hours on Dec 5th. Also, Mike Davis and his wife Debbie and a host of others. PER Ray Paradowski chaired this daylong partnership with the Salvation Army. Location this years was the Harris teeter grocery store on Jake Alexander

Elks Memorial Service this Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Lodge will conduct it's annual Memorial Service at 2 p.m. on Sunday December the 6th in the Lodge room. Music will be furnished by the St John's Lutheran Church Center Celebration worship team. Light refreshments to follow and the public is welcomed to attend.
The club room opening will be delayed until approximately 3 p.m.

Paul Preston Hinkle, Sr., 90, of Salisbury, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2009 at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born September 28, 1919 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Emma Kate Leonard Hinkle and Hollis Leo Hinkle, Sr.

Mr. Hinkle was a graduate of Spencer High School, class of 1936, as Valedictorian. In 1940, he graduated from Wake Forest University, where his major was mathematics.

A veteran of the United States Army, he served from November of 1942 to February of 1946, as Captain, and received the American Campaign Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and Purple Heart.

His work history includes working as a teacher at Biltmore College, a Rowan County Veterans Service Officer, was the Register of Deeds for Rowan County, and Rowan County Postmaster for 27 years.

Mr. Hinkle was also in the Rowan County Lions Club and was the treasurer for Rowan County Veteran’s Council for over 50 years, and a member of the Elk’s Lodge, VFW Post # 3006.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Rebecca Agner Hinkle, who died June 23, 2002; son, Paul Preston Hinkle, Jr. on May 30, 2006; and sisters, Alma Whirlow and Elizabeth Lam.

Survivors include daughters, Becky Ann Hinkle of Salisbury, Jean Trexler of Rockwell, Sarah Riedel of Macon, GA; brothers, H. L. Hinkle, Jr. (Frances) of Spencer and James Ray Hinkle (Millie) of Pittsboro; 6 grandchildren, Preston and Laura Hinkle, Sasha Lathon, Erica Adams, Jacquelyn Spear and Carrie Walburn; 6 step-grandchildren, Bryan Trexler, Joel Trexler, Kristen Agner, John Waller, Ben Padilla and Audrey Kluge; 4 great-grandchildren, Trey Spear, Christopher Spear, Taylor Adams and Hollis Walburn.

He is also survived by his special friend and companion, Edith Crowell and many, many friends.

Visitation: 7-8:30 PM – Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Service: 3:00 PM – Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Oakdale Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richard A. Gross and the Rev. Robert T. Heard, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Rowan County Honor Guard.

Christmas Parade at the Elks was great!

We had a great day at the Lodge for the parade. Many thanks for all the volunteers who cooked, sold drinks and food, set-up the equipments, cleaned up etc.

We were blessed with a beautiful day and the parade was great. You can see many pictures at the Salisbury Post.

Also, and in addition to raising some funds from the food sales, the PER drawing generated $2100 for the Lodge. The proceeds of which will be designated to a worthy cause at the next PER meeting.

Brother Dennis Welmon passes away

SALISBURY - Richard Dennis Wellmon, 54, of Salisbury, passed away Nov. 18, 2009, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.

Mr. Wellmon was born July 13, 1955, in Cleveland County, a son of the late Carl Ray Weldon and Annie Pearl Gantt Wellmon. He graduated from Crest High School in Cleveland County.

A construction technician for Time Warner Cable, he was a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church. Dennis was also a member of Salisbury Elks Lodge 699.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher Tom Wellmon.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Judy White Wellmon; one son, Richard Dennis Wellmon II of Shelby; and one daughter, Shelby Elizabeth Wellmon of Salisbury.

One brother survives, Michael Eugene Wellmon of Shelby; two sisters, Kathy Barrett of Shelby and Joy Gold of Rutherfordton County; and one grandchild, Macy Lynn Wellmon.

Service and Visitation: The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wittenberg Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Tom Cogan, pastor, with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Church from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

SALISBURY - Edward N. Hege, 99, of Salisbury, passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at North Carolina State Veterans Home.

Born Feb. 23, 1910, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Kate McCless Hege and John D. Hege, Sr. A graduate of Boyden High School and the Suwanee Military Academy in Tennessee, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Hege was employed by North Carolina Finishing Company, where he was manager of Information Services.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Susan Rankin Hege, who died Dec. 18, 2002; and brother John D. Hege, Jr.

Survivors include his two sons, Edward R. Hege (Jane) of Salisbury and John T. Hege (Luciene) of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Amy Atwell (Mark) of Oak Island and Jeffrey Hege of Norfolk, Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Naiema Hege.

Graveside Service: 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 at the Salisbury National Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Honor Guard.

SALISBURY - Clarence V. "C.V." Nance, 84, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009.

Born Nov. 5, 1924, in Huntington, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles Vernon and Rosa Davis Nance. Mr. Nance attended Marshall University.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 in the 216 Chemical Service Company as a staff sergeant. He received the Philippine Liberation Medal in 2006 from Embassy of the Philippines Office of Veterans Affairs.

Mr. Nance was employed at Aldens Corporation as the store manager of Young's Department Store in Alton, Ill., from 1950-1961. He was then transferred to Bowling Green, Ky., as store manager of Pushins Department Store, 1961-1971. He then became the manager/owner of Guyes of Salisbury from 1972-1986 when the store closed. He was the gift shop manager at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte from 1991-2003, when he retired.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church since 1972. Mr. Nance had been a lifelong member of the Elks lodge since 1952. He served two terms as the Exalted Ruler of Bowling Green Chapter. He is also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Mr. Nance was a great husband, a great father and a great grandfather.

Mr. Nance is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Ann Cassell Nance and son in law Deputy Richard Allen Hillard.

He is survived by his daughters, Mercy Sister Nancy Nance of Belmont, Michele Hillard of Salisbury and Mary Ann Roberson and husband Donnie of Salisbury; sons Charles Nance and wife Karen of Mocksville and John Nance and wife Betsy of Roaring River; grandchildren Joseph and Claire Hillard of Salisbury, Meredith, Andrew, and Leah Nance of Roaring River.

Services and Visitation: A prayer service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Summersett Memorial Chapel with visitation following until 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be conducted Wednesday Nov. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials: May be made to Holy Angels, P.O. Box 710, Belmont, NC 28012.

Salisbury Elks initiates 12 new Elks on Oct 1

During the official visit of the District Deputy to the Lodge on Thursday Oct 1, 2009, we initiated 12 new Elks. A good time appeared to be had by all and the visit by DD Butch Tomlison was uneventful. Our Lodge appears to doing quite well despite the most difficult economic times.

Our ER Bob Sce also had the distinct pleasure of initiating his daughter Barb Cannito as a new member. Her sister, Julie Caldwell, rendered the Leading Knight's part flawlessly. So quite the family affair!

Long time Elk, Vernon Sherrill passed away 9/23/09

SALISBURY - Vernon Eugene Sherrill, 69, of Salisbury, died Sept. 23, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center, Northeast, Concord.

Born Sept. 21, 1940, in Rowan County, he was the son of Mary Ritchie Sherrill of Salisbury and the late J. Eugene Sherrill.

He graduated from Granite Quarry High School and received his formal education at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Pensacola Junior College, Pepperdine University and UNC-Chapel Hill Institute of Government.

Mr. Sherrill was a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Navy retiring in 1980. He served as Recreation Administrator and the first Public Services Director of the City of Salisbury, retiring after 25 years of service.

He was a lifelong active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served on various Boards and Committees.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forty and Eight, Navy Cryptologic Veterans Association, Fleet Reserve Association, Salisbury Elks and Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge 657, AF&AM.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hinds Sherrill; daughter Karen Sherrill Watts and husband Lee of Indian Trail; son Brett Jason Sherrill of Salisbury; one grandson, Levi Sherrill; two step-grandchildren, Adam and Jacob Watts; sister Nancy Henderson Poe and husband James; and three nephews.

Service: Graveside services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Monday at the U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard, with the Rev. William Ketchie, minister of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Navy Honor Guard..

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Summersett Funeral Home.

SALISBURY - Curtis Ray Call, age 79, of Salisbury, passed away Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at North Carolina State Veterans Home.

Born Feb. 24, 1930, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Beulah Ridenhour Call and Oscar Charlie Call.

Mr. Call was a graduate of Spencer High School and Barber School. He was employed by Southern Railway and later became the owner/operator of Elite Barber Shop. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean War.

Mr. Call was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church, Salisbury Kiwanis Club, Salisbury Elks Lodge 699, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342 and Spencer Moose Lodge.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Charles Marshall Call, Sr. and Jay Jackson Call.

Survivors include his brother, William Richard Call of Waxaw; and sisters Barbara Jarrett of Lexington and Bertie Snyder (Robert) of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wed-nesday, Sept. 23 at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Nazareth Children's Home Outing

The 11th annual Nazareth Children's Home outing was another success. While very hot weather, we had no rain, the catfish were biting, there was plenty of boats to ride on, the food was plentiful and the T-shirt painting was a big hit that even a number of Elks enjoyed.

We had about 41 kids and 15 counselors as well as several dozen Elks helping out.

Many thanks to Zach and Patsy Holshouser for maintaining the 20+ fishing poles and donating the bait and one fishing rod that was eventually given to the kid catching the biggest fish. Zach has helped with this every year except one.
Also many others helped. There was non-elk Mark Ritchie who arranged for the Cheerwine drink donation and who also took a number of folks on a boat ride or two. Glen Shimmel, Allen Riggs and Andy and Alice Jenkins and Jim Oliver gave rides as well. That's always a big hit.
thanks to Olywn Wagoner for her donation of embroidered Elks hats. They came in handy for those who forgot to bring there own.
The t-shirt painting was a big hit this year and many thanks to Nicki Shifts and Vanessa Eanes for all there work on this. The shirts were donated by Nicki's dad and $50 came from her employer.
Food was donated by Lilly Marks as well as Mike Jones, Tammy Rivers and Juli copley. Special thanks to ER Bob Sce, Bernie McDonald and James Caldwell for the excellent cooking of hamburgers and hotdogs. Then there was Gail Sce, Julie Caldwell and Darlene McDonald, Linda Brown, Brad Walworth and a few others whose name I apologize in advance for not listing or misspelling.
Oh and special thanks to Kevin Frey for pressure washing the pier. It looked great and no one suffered any slips or falls thanks to his efforts.

Elk life member Tom Fink passed away

SALISBURY - Thomas John Fink, 85, of Salisbury, went to be safe in the arms of Jesus on June 15, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Fink was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Mansfield, Ohio, to the late Donna Fern Fink and Otto John Fink. He was a graduate of Mansfield, Ohio, schools, attended Duke University from 1942-43 and then went to serve his country as a fighter pilot and Lieutenant in the U.S. Army flying a B-17. He then went back to college and graduated from Ohio State in 1948. He was a supervisor at W.A. Brown.

Mr. Fink attended Trinity Wesleyan Church and was an usher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years.

Mr. Fink was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Eifler Fink; a son Thomas Fink, Jr.; and a brother, Bob Fink.

He is survived by a wife, Julia Fink; five stepdaughters, Brenda Morgan and husband Steve of Rockwell, Christine Brush and husband Byron of Rockwell, Teresa McFarland and husband Charles of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kimberly Morgan and husband Dilbert of Gold Hill and Joy Struggs and husband Scott of Salisbury; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation and Service: The family will receive friends at Summersett Funeral Home on Friday, June 19 from 1-2 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in Summersett Memorial Chapel. Pastor Randy Addison will be officiating. Entombment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In addition to the hoop shoot that was held on the 13th of December, we rang the bell
for the Salvation Army out front of K-Mart. Pictured here is Julie Copley and her daughter
Allison Holshouser. The lodge had someone ringing most of the day and a good bit of money was collected as a result.

The Lodge also continued it's tradition of hosting a kids Christmas party. Many gifts were bought and given away thanks to generosity of a number of Elks. Santa was on hand to help distribute presents and plenty of snacks and drinks were furnished as well. A tip of the antlers to Eddy Harwood, Patty Turner, the Sce's, the Brown's, Vanessa Eanes and a number of others who helped put this on. About 30 kids received gifts and all appeared to have a good time.

On Dec 13 at Hall gymnasium the finals of the Lodge Hoop shoot were held.

Winners in the boys 10-11 age bracket were:

1st place- Justin Love. He made 17 of 25 free trows.
2nd- Logan Shupping. 14 free throws
3 rd- Cody Meadows. 9 free throws.

In the 12 to 13 age bracket:

1 st - Samuel Wyrick. He made 20 of 25 free throws.
2nd - Seth Wyrick. 18 free throws
3rd- Al Britford Jr. 17 free throws

SALISBURY - Virginia "Ginny" Blanchard Drobinko, 79, of Salisbury, passed away, Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 at her residence.Mrs. Drobinko was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of the Salisbury Elks Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, the Ladies Auxiliary of Hudson-Miller Tatum VFW Post 3006, and an associate member of the Marine Corp League 2nd Marine Division Association.

Survivors include her husband, John Drobinko, whom she married on March 2, 1985, and several nieces and nephews.Services and Visitation: A Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 12 p.m. at the US National Cemetery-Statesville Blvd. location. A Prayer Service will be held Monday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 p.m.

Elks VA Bingo special lap blanket gifts.

The Salisbury Elks have been holding a a monthly bingo for many years for the Veterans's at the Salisbury NC Veteran's Hospital.

On this special occasion, 8 lap blankets were given away as door prizes. These blankets were hand crafted by allie Holshouser and her sister. Allie is Tiler of our Lodge by the way. As you can see these blankets were emblased with specific armed services logos.

Needless to say, the lucky winners were highly appreciative of these one of kind blankets. A tip of the antlers to Allie and her sister for these amazing gifts.

Other Elks Lodges in the area also engage in monthly activities at the Salisbury VA.

Brother Tom Dougan passes away Sept 24, 2008

SALISBURY - Thomas George Dougan, 78, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center.

Born Feb. 3, 1930, in Sharpsburg, Pa., he was the son of Catherine Metro Dougan of Atlanta, Ga., and the late Harry Dougan, Sr. Mr. Dougan was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and a graduate of Duquesne University. He was previously employed by ServiceMaster as a Director of Material Management. A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, he was also a member of Elks Lodge and Harold B. Jarrett American Legion.

Mr. Dougan was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Dougan and Harry Dougan, Jr.Survivors include his wife, Virginia Mae Collier Dougan; sons Tom Dougan (Marion) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Daniel Dougan (Jane) of Coffeeville, Kans., Michael Dougan, Randall Dougan (Cynthia) and Timothy Dougan (Karen), all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one stepson, Gary Comer (Cindy) of Florence, Ky.; one stepdaughter, Sandra Hensley (Beebe) of Limestone, Tenn.; one sister, Delores McCormick (Jack) of Atlanta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

SALISBURY - Noah Robinson "Mac" McKinney, age 89, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at his residence. He was born April 30, 1919, in Hyde County, the son of the late Xenia Selby McKinney and the late Julius T. McKinney. He attended Hyde County schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving during World War II.

Mr. McKinney worked for Schlitz Beer Distributors for 43 years as a driver and salesman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Kincaid McKinney, on June 20, 2008, whom he married Nov. 15, 1947; brothers Vincent "Snooks" McKinney and Hyatt (Mac) McKinney; and sister Ruth Mann.

Survivors include his brothers, Earl McKinney and P.D. McKinney, both of Salisbury, and P.H. McKinney of Granite Quarry; sisters Emogene Carawan of Salisbury, Lois Fulp of Durham, Willie Testa of Auburn, N.Y., Eunice Dwiggings of Mocksville and Irene Hinson of Salisbury.

Service: A Graveside Service will be at 12 Noon Saturday at Rowan Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Don Phillips with military graveside rites by Rowan County Honor Guard.

Visitation: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Lyerly Funeral Home.Memorials: Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 720 Grove St., Salisbury, NC 28144.

Elks Welcome new members ~ DD Jack King visit

We had a great meeting in August where we initiated 8 men and women into the BPOE .

It also was the official visit of our west central district deputy Jack King (he's the one seated). He and his two assistants inspected the lodge, our books and other important aspects and gave us a very favorable report. Exalter Ruler Kevin Frey is first on the left.

Prior to the meeting a barbeque dinner was served. Following the hour and half meeting that began at 7:30, refreshments were served and all of our new Elks were welcomed into the Lodge.

Nazareth Kids Day, June 21

We had a great day at the River Park. We counted nearly 60 kids plus house parents from the home. The weatherman was wrong and the rain held off. We had probably the best and largest group of volunteers as well.

Fishing however wasn't quite as good as last year but they still had a great time. One young girl caught a large snapping turtle and courageously brought him up under the shelter for all to gawk.

Special thanks to Glenn Shimmell, LA and Marla, Dano, Jeff Mills and Mike Davis for bringing their boats and taking all out for rides. Also, Julie & Steve Copley for cooking the chili, Zach Holshouser for furnishing the worms, Glen Shimmell for the hot dogs, Danny Ray for 25 NEW fishing rods and Ellen Wagoner for donating a doz hats which came in handy when the sun finally came out.
Also, we had lots of help with the fishing and serving. New members Cal and Krista Flannery, Paul Flahive, Brad Walworth, Audrey Dennis and our intrepid ER Kevin Frey and Sec. Vanessa Eanes. There are others I'm sure I've missed but a great job was done and one that these kids greatly appreciate.

Since 1908, Elks across America have honored our flag by holding a ceremony observing the significance of this grand symbol of our great country. Flags we used since Colonial times were on display and a 30 minute program was given by various Officer's of the Lodge. PER Linda Brown delivered the main message quite eloquently and all seemed appreciative.

We had a good crowd on hand, the weather was hot as one could see from ER Kevin Frey's attire and the popular poker run was about to begin a few hours later. So another good day in Elkdom!

NC Elks Spring meeting

A few of us attended the Spring Convention in New Bern the first weekend of May. It was a beautiful weekend with several hundred elks and guests attending.

Featured here is Exalted Ruler Kevin Frey, Secretary Vanessa Eanes, Past Exalted Ruler Bob Sce and newsletter editor Gail Sce.

Bob and Gail's golf team won the tournament thanks to a lucky draw that found them pared with a scratch golfer. Yours truly's team had to scratch and sniff to eke out a tie for 3rd place. No ringer's for us to lean on!

All and all, it was a good meeting. There is a new Elks Lodge in Shallotte NC that will be instituted on May 18th. That's a good thing and it is expected for this lodge to grow rapidly. However, NC overall lost 300+ Elks this past year which is troubling. Salisbury did it's part though adding 23 to our rolls making this the 13th consecutive increase which brings us up to 433 Elks.

The New Bern Elks lodge hosted the event and they have a unique lodge in that it is open 24/7. Each of there 300 members get a key and essentially work on the honor system. It's beer and wine only though. Volunteers work for special events and they have a group called the Committee of 100 that apparently provides or encourages participation. New Bern was instituted in 1902 and a number of pictures of it's early history can be found at www.elkshistory.org

Shag club dances the night away at the Lodge

More than 260 shag club members danced Saturday night away at the Salisbury Elks Lodge.

The Salisbury Shag Club brought its annual competition to the Elks Lodge and drew dancers from 12 shag clubs across the Piedmont. And at least two Richmond, Va. club members showed up to enjoy the event.

The Salisbury club, headed by President Jeff Mills, began the competition four years ago. Cash prizes are awarded based not on dancing, but on which clubs have the highest percentage of members attending.

While the Winston-Salem club had 48 members on the floor, Piedmont Shag Club of Harrisburg -- a much smaller club -- won top honors with 47 members participating. The top three clubs get cash prizes, which organizers say are used for charities.

Rae and Connie French serve as coordinators of the competition. Over the past year, the club held a social at the Elks Lodge on the fourth Saturday night of each month.

"The Elks Lodge and the club are both looking for new members," said Rae French. "We can help each other out."
French said the Elks Lodge offered to host the club's big event and it went very well.

Dance areas were set up downstairs and upstairs with local DJs Butch Mattox, of Mount Pleasant, and Dana Grubb, of Spencer, virtually donating their time.

For the past three years, the annual competition has been held at Cripple Creek (formerly John's Tavern) on Stokes Ferry Road.
The club also holds a dance each Friday night at the Boat and Ski Club and is working to attract new and younger members.

"We need to get younger folks involved. We're trying to preserve the music and the dance. We don't want to see the Carolina shag dance go by the wayside," said Rae French, who met his wife, Connie, at a dance at Myrtle Beach.

Some of the highlights included a picture of Lexington elk member Jeff Swing presenting the NC Brain Tumor research Center a check for $9000. $2500 of this total was a donation by him with the balance coming from this past summer's high rock lake poker run. This joint effort between Salisbury and Lexington lodges really packs them in at our river park. Hundreds attend and a good time is had by all.

Also in the newsletter is a list of the Hoop Shoot contest and Most Valuable student scholarship selections as well as updates on the bowling league and Officer messages. There are also 31 who have not paid there dues. If you know any of these members, please contact them and ask them to remain a member.

We had a nice crowd of about 40 Elks and guests at the meeting. Pictured to the right are those that are PER's (we had 11) and the Old Timer's who attended.
The event was held downstairs for several who due to age and medical issues could not make it up the stairs.

A good meal was served, the meeting went well and it was nice to here the kind comments from all who spoke about their long association with our Lodge. In addition, the DD spoke highly of our Lodge's efforts over the years. His heartfelt comments were greeted enthusiastically by all.

Finally, nominations were made for Officer's for the upcoming year. They will be voted on at our next meeting on Thursday Feb 21.

Larry & Susan Cloninger receive philantropic award

Susan K. and Larry T. Cloninger Jr. will be presented the inaugural Wilson L. Smith Philanthropic Award at the Rowan Regional Medical Center Foundation's annual Donor Appreciation and Awards Dinner on Jan. 24 at the Holiday Inn.
The prestigious award will honor the Cloningers' extraordinary philanthropy and special service to Rowan Regional Medical Center Foundation, the Partners in Progress Capital Campaign, the John Campbell Memorial Golf Classic and the Patrons Ball.
In recognition of the Cloningers' generous financial pledge to the foundation's $25 Million Partners in Progress Capital Campaign, the reception area in the Medical Center's Emergency Department was named in their honor.
The Cloningers have supported the foundation's annual John Campbell Memorial Golf Classic for the past six years and Cloninger Ford-Toyota-Scion has been the presenting sponsor for the tournament since 2003.
Most recently, the Cloningers chaired the 2007 black-tie Patrons Ball, which set a new fundraising record of $150,812 in total financial support. The proceeds were used to purchase new patient beds at Rowan Regional.

George Curtis "Smitty" Smith passing

George Curtis "Smitty" Smith, 98, of 216 Wildwood Ave., died Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Born June 1, 1909, in York County, S.C., Mr. Smith was the son of the late Samuel Curtis and Georgia Ann Price Smith. He graduated from York High School and after attending business school, he spent 10 years with Swift and Company in their Branch House Accounting Department. He entered public accounting in 1937 with the firm of Frank P. Buck Company. He passed the Uniform Certified Public Accounting examination in 1944, and in October 1947, he and William A. Sherrill purchased the firm of Frank P. Buck Company from Frank P. Buck. They operated the firm under that name until October 1957, at which time the name of the firm was changed to Sherrill & Smith, CPA's. He retired from the firm September 30, 1981. The firm continues to operate under the name of Sherrill & Smith, CPA's.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1937 and served on numerous church boards. He was also a member of the following professional organizations: American Institute of CPA's, N.C. Association of CPA's and local chapter of CPA's; and former member of the Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge and Country Club of Salisbury.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Bryant Smith, on February 13, 1969. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Beaver Smith, whom he married May 16, 1970; daughter Eve S. Appleby (Peter) of Augusta, Ga.; stepdaughter Sandra N. Hamilton (Claude) of Charlotte; grandchildren Ashley Speizman, Michael Appleby and Kim Appleby; and great-grandchildren Justin Speizman, Isabella, Olivia, Madeleine, Pepper, Chandler and Catherine Appleby.

Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen D. Haines and the Rev. Martha Ballard officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rowan Memorial Park. Visitation: Following the memorial service.

Lodge helps with Slavation Army Bell ringing

While there were many volunteers, only these photos were taken.
Teresa McGarrity, Julie Copley and Allison Holshouser maned 1 one hour shift.

Here was Jake Boltz who did a fine job of soliciting donations. Jim Stout looks on from the left. The Elks have a long history for working with the Salvation Army having provided much needed funds during WWI.

Salisbury has been ringing the bell since at least the 50's, perhaps earlier too.

Beautiful day for a Christmas Parade

We had a great day for a Christmas parade. Temperature was in the 70's.
The house committee and other volunteers did a great job in setting up for it. We sold corn dogs, popcorn and other things outside.

Inside, free hotdogs and snacks for the many members who stopped in.

Later on at about 6:30, the annual PER 1/2 and 1/2 was held with Robert Wall and ? winning it. The proceedings of this will go to an Elk in distress.

Life Member Bill D Sides passes away at age 84

SALISBURY - Bill D. Sides, age 84 of Salisbury died Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the North Carolina Veterans Nursing Home, Salisbury.Mr. Sides was born December 27, 1922 in Cabarrus County, he was the son of the late Pearson DeBerry and Anna Mae Wagoner Sides. He was reared in the Nazareth Children Home from age five and attended the Rockwell Schools. Mr. Sides served in the US Navy for over eighteen years serving as a Chief on the USS Ranger before retiring in 1959 before transferring to the Fleet Reserve.

He was the owner and operator of the Sides Realty and Construction Company for many years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, very active member of the Salisbury Elks Club Number 699 where he was Elk of the Year in 1977 and received the Exalted Ruler Award. He helped organize the Elks Summer Boys Camp at Hendersonville, and received the Devoted Leadership Award in l999. He was a member of the Samuel C. Hart Post #342 of the American Legion and the Hudson Miller Tatum Post # 3006 of the VFW.

His wife Neva Jean Helsley Sides preceded him in death, January 18, 1998, a son Stephen Sides preceded him in death November 17, 2006, brother Allen Pete Sides, sisters; Letha Boots Peeler, Lucille Basinger and Daisy Davis.He is survived by one daughter Sherri File and companion Joel Crawford of Salisbury, one son; David Sides of Boone, grandchildren; Trisha Griffin, John Sides, Leigh Wright, Dylan Sides and Jason Sides, great-grandchildren, Breana Griffin, Andrea Griffin, Mark Sides, nieces Melba Pickler, Sally Thompson, Judy Leazer, Kay Peele, Gertrude Sapp, Virginia Long, Myrna Crocker, nephews; Tony Basinger , John Basinger, Harry Peeler, Stanley Peeler and Paul Sides.

Visitation: The family will see friends from 1-2:00 pm Tuesday at the Summersett Funeral Home. Members of the Salisbury Elks Club will serve as pallbearers.Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Tuesday at the Summersett Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Randal V. SALISBURY - Mr. James Edward Mesimore, age 86, of Salisbury passed away Friday September 14, 2007 at Genesis Healthcare. He was born May 29, 1921 in Rowan County the son of the late James Earl Mesimore and the late Carrie Savannah File Mesimore.He was a graduate of Boyden High School and was a Veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII. Mr. Mesimore retired from Norfolk and Southern Railway after more than 40 years of service. He was a member of Haven Lutheran Church, Fulton Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Shrine Lodge and was instrumental in the development of the North Carolina Transportation Museum and received the Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award in 2006. Survivors include his wife of 61 years Grace Collins Mesimore, daughter Cheryl Mesimore and companion Meryle Schwartz of Hillsborough, sister Mary Elizabeth Chunn Mesimore of Cary, nieces Brenda Marcum and husband Neil of Granite Quarry, and Debbie McSorley and husband Dave of Apex.Services: 11:00 am Monday September 17, 2007 at James C. For the past nine years, we have been exhibiting at the Rowan County Fair. There we distribute thousands of substance abuse educational materials to the fair goers. This picture here is of Elks Ray Paradowski, Julie Blaisure, her daughter and three visitors to our booth. Other Elks workers were Gail and Bob Sce, Kevin Frey, Linda Brown, Elbert Culp, Earl Sawyer, Mike Jones & Sandy Jones. Thanks to all for making this a big hit. Actually after 9 years, people are well aware of us and stop by to say hello and to thank us for our efforts.

The drug awareness display case was definitely a hit. This case showed life like examples of drugs. There was also a booklet that listed the different types of drugs displayed and gave the typical symptoms when used

We also used a computer slide show that rotated pictures of victims of substance abuse, especially meth. Also, a number of local news articles that depicted some of the tragic results that occur when folks engage in risky behavior. Life Member Ralph Ketner, founder of Food Lion, featured in Post

Brother Ralph Ketner, member since the middle 50's, was recently featured in the local paper. This original story was printed in the Discover magazine of Ralph's Alma mater Tri-State University in Angola, IN. They wrote a nice story detailing Ralph and his partner's rise to prominence with the Food Lion grocery store chain.

We are practicing now and learning about leisure time in history and it's role in modern day society. I am taking a Math class and Argumentative research. I can't believe I used to argue so much without realizing how hard it really is to do it right and write it down. If you know any English majors I sure could use some advice. College is so awesome. It's like being in your own city here. We have over 30,000 students on campus. I am finding my way around.and learning to love a bicycle again, although I haven't figured out how to rig my golf bag on it yet. Don Nickell passes away Aug 10. Elk since 1984

Nickell, 74, of Salisbury, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2007 at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.Born Nov. 16, 1932 in Osborne, Kans., he was the son of the late Floyd and Dorothy Wonderlich Nickell. A graduate of Beloit Kansas High School, he served in the US Marine Corps from 1951-53 during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Geology.Mr. Nickell was one of the founders of Mid Atlantic Explosives. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury, Salisbury Elks Club, Spencer Moose Lodge, Harold B Jarrett American Legion Post #342, and the VFW Post 6242, Beloit, Kans. Member of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge #90, A.F. & A.M., Topeka, Kans. We had 6 new Elks join with us this evening. From left to right, they are Jan Nichols, Erica Beaver, Kim chapman, David Thrift, Doug Ray and Mike Mauney. Welcome new Elks!! BTW, PDDGER Jim Hill looks on from the back row.

In our 1 hr and 15 min meeting it was also approved to donate $1000 of the $2700 poker run receipt to Camp Carefree, one of our State projects. So it was a very good night.

The Granite Quarry fire and police department sponsored a pancake breakfast on Sat July 14th. They drew quite a crowd and at $5 donation per plate should have raised a considerable sum for our fellow Elk. Kim btw suffers from a number of life threatening health issues. C. V Nance recovering

On May 24th, I went to visit C.V. Nance, a 55 year Elk, at the local hospital. He's recovering from back surgery and getting a little better everyday.
The docs do want him to go back to the Lutheran home for rehab but CV hasn't been home since March 8th. So he has declined to listen to them and instead will go home and get home based rehab there.

I'm sure C.V. would like some company if any of you Elks are inclined to give him a call.

The magazine C.V. is holding is an old Elks Magazine that was published the month of his birth. I'll let him tell you when that was.

Life Member John Beard passes away

SALISBURY - Mr. John Hayden Beard, age 79, of Salisbury, died on Saturday, May 19, 2007 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Born in Salisbury on July 4, 1927, he was the son of the late Mildred Patterson Beard and Bryce Parker Beard, Sr. Mr. Beard was a graduate of Georgia Military Academy, and attended Catawba College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after serving in the U.S. Navy during post WWII.Upon returning to Salisbury, he worked for the family business, and served as President and CEO for Taylor Manufacturing Co. from 1968 until it was sold to Litton Industries in 1983. Mr. Beard was a lifetime member of the Rotary Club of Salisbury and the Elks Lodge of Salisbury.Mr. Beard was very active in the Rowan County historic preservation efforts, especially pertaining to the Grimes Mill project and the Old Lutheran Cemetery Restoration. He had a keen interest in the preservation of Gold Hill and donated mining artifacts for a future museum. Mr. Beard's most recent endeavor concerned helping make possible the rebuilding of the petting barn at Dan Nicholas Park.Mr. Beard was preceded in death by his wife Francoise Graf Beard who died November 22, 1978. Two brothers, Bryce Parker Beard, Jr and Rufus Morehead Beard also preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters, Christiana Graf Beard and Germaine Beard Whitaker and her husband, Bob of Salisbury. A brother, Alexander Patterson Beard and his wife Patsy Arey Beard of Salisbury, and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Richardson and her husband, Dean of Sparta, NC also survive him as well as four grandchildren: Stefan Beard Wilson, Hayden Francoise Henderson, Robert Lewis Whitaker, and John Edward Whitaker; and three great-grandchildren.The family will see friends from 2-3 PM Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at Summersett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Dr. Kenneth Lance, Minister of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Chestnut Hill Cemetery. The family will be at the home: 106 Travis Lane, Salisbury at other times.In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Dan Nicholas Park 6800 Bringle Ferry Rd. Salisbury, NC 28146; The Salvation Army PO Box 625 Salisbury, NC 28145; The Rowan Museum 202 North Main St. Salisbury, NC 28144; or to the charity of your choice.

May 17th Lodge meeting -8 new Initiation

The Lodge initiated 8 new elks into the Order this night. While most of the names escape me, all in attendance appeared to have a great time
The second picture is the Old geezer Elk corner. They come early and snag the best sofa seats!
The third pic is of John Salonen (right) our veteran's affairs chair and another Elk whose name escapes me
All in all, the Lodge is beginning the new lodge year with a bang. So far, 23 have been either reinstated, transferred in, initiated or are awaiting initiation.

Tyesha J. Brooks, pictured above left, is a student at West Rowan High School and is one of two recipients of the first annual Donald Stout Memorial Scholarship awards sponsored by Elks Lodge #699. Tyesha will be attending Winston-Salem State University where she will be pursuing a nursing degree.

Brittany L. Wietbrock, pictured above right, also a student at West Rowan High, has been awarded the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student scholarship award. Brittany plans to attend Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory as a political science major.

Other local students who were given awards were:

Most Valuable Student awards were given to Jonathan W. Rash, Alexander J. Byrd, and Kaci Michelle Mulkey.

The second Donald Stout Memorial award went to George M Griffin.

All scholarships awarded were in the amount of $1,000. Congratulations to all recipients.

Salisbury Elks NC 699 Blog

Welcome to Salisbury Elks Lodge #699 new blog! Actually, it's not new as I started one last year, got distracted by one thing or another and dropped it. Plus, it was pain to upload articles. Still, those 6 posts can be found at http://elknc.blogspot.com But things have improved with google now and it's alot easier to add material.

Anyhoo, we hope this will be a better way to keep up with what's going on with our many lodge activities as well as our members.
