Long time Elk, Vernon Sherrill passed away 9/23/09


SALISBURY - Vernon Eugene Sherrill, 69, of Salisbury, died Sept. 23, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center, Northeast, Concord.

Born Sept. 21, 1940, in Rowan County, he was the son of Mary Ritchie Sherrill of Salisbury and the late J. Eugene Sherrill.

He graduated from Granite Quarry High School and received his formal education at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Pensacola Junior College, Pepperdine University and UNC-Chapel Hill Institute of Government.

Mr. Sherrill was a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Navy retiring in 1980. He served as Recreation Administrator and the first Public Services Director of the City of Salisbury, retiring after 25 years of service.

He was a lifelong active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served on various Boards and Committees.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forty and Eight, Navy Cryptologic Veterans Association, Fleet Reserve Association, Salisbury Elks and Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge 657, AF&AM.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hinds Sherrill; daughter Karen Sherrill Watts and husband Lee of Indian Trail; son Brett Jason Sherrill of Salisbury; one grandson, Levi Sherrill; two step-grandchildren, Adam and Jacob Watts; sister Nancy Henderson Poe and husband James; and three nephews.

Service: Graveside services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Monday at the U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard, with the Rev. William Ketchie, minister of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Navy Honor Guard..

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Summersett Funeral Home.
