"C.V." Nance, 84, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009


Clarence 'C.V.' Nance

SALISBURY - Clarence V. "C.V." Nance, 84, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009.

Born Nov. 5, 1924, in Huntington, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles Vernon and Rosa Davis Nance. Mr. Nance attended Marshall University.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 in the 216 Chemical Service Company as a staff sergeant. He received the Philippine Liberation Medal in 2006 from Embassy of the Philippines Office of Veterans Affairs.

Mr. Nance was employed at Aldens Corporation as the store manager of Young's Department Store in Alton, Ill., from 1950-1961. He was then transferred to Bowling Green, Ky., as store manager of Pushins Department Store, 1961-1971. He then became the manager/owner of Guyes of Salisbury from 1972-1986 when the store closed. He was the gift shop manager at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte from 1991-2003, when he retired.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church since 1972. Mr. Nance had been a lifelong member of the Elks lodge since 1952. He served two terms as the Exalted Ruler of Bowling Green Chapter. He is also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Mr. Nance was a great husband, a great father and a great grandfather.

Mr. Nance is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Ann Cassell Nance and son in law Deputy Richard Allen Hillard.

He is survived by his daughters, Mercy Sister Nancy Nance of Belmont, Michele Hillard of Salisbury and Mary Ann Roberson and husband Donnie of Salisbury; sons Charles Nance and wife Karen of Mocksville and John Nance and wife Betsy of Roaring River; grandchildren Joseph and Claire Hillard of Salisbury, Meredith, Andrew, and Leah Nance of Roaring River.

Services and Visitation: A prayer service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Summersett Memorial Chapel with visitation following until 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be conducted Wednesday Nov. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
