Life Member Al Boulas passes away

SALISBURY - Albert Joseph "Al" Boulus, 86, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 26, 1923, he was the first baby born in the United States in his Lebanese family. He was the son of the late Olga Ferris Boulus and Pete Boulus and was a graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury.

After school he went to work for Pilot Insurance but decided to go into business for himself. In 1950, at the age of 26, he opened Al's Night Hawk and operated it until Feb. 25, 2001, for over 50 years.

Mr. Boulus was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and Moose lodges and was an avid golfer at Corbin Hills Golf Course.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Wood Boulus, whom he married Dec. 24, 1944; a son, Michael Boulus of Raleigh, and his sons, Ian Boulus and Albert Boulus, and a daughter, Sandra Boulus Flowe and husband Dan of Salisbury and their children, Tony Graham of Guyton, Okla., Shai Graham Harley and husband Tom and great-grandchildren Jaelon and Brynn Harley, all of Kansas City, Kan., and granddaughter Jennifer Flowe Blevins and husband Andy of Hickory. A sister, Doris Bernard and husband Don of Charlotte, also survives him.

Services/Visitation: Recitation of the Rosary will be held Thursday night at 6 p.m. followed by a visitation till 9 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on North Fulton Street with entombment to follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.
