George Curtis "Smitty" Smith passing


SALISBURY -
George Curtis "Smitty" Smith, 98, of 216 Wildwood Ave., died Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Born June 1, 1909, in York County, S.C., Mr. Smith was the son of the late Samuel Curtis and Georgia Ann Price Smith. He graduated from York High School and after attending business school, he spent 10 years with Swift and Company in their Branch House Accounting Department. He entered public accounting in 1937 with the firm of Frank P. Buck Company. He passed the Uniform Certified Public Accounting examination in 1944, and in October 1947, he and William A. Sherrill purchased the firm of Frank P. Buck Company from Frank P. Buck. They operated the firm under that name until October 1957, at which time the name of the firm was changed to Sherrill & Smith, CPA's. He retired from the firm September 30, 1981. The firm continues to operate under the name of Sherrill & Smith, CPA's.


He was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1937 and served on numerous church boards. He was also a member of the following professional organizations: American Institute of CPA's, N.C. Association of CPA's and local chapter of CPA's; and former member of the Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge and Country Club of Salisbury.


He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Bryant Smith, on February 13, 1969. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Beaver Smith, whom he married May 16, 1970; daughter Eve S. Appleby (Peter) of Augusta, Ga.; stepdaughter Sandra N. Hamilton (Claude) of Charlotte; grandchildren Ashley Speizman, Michael Appleby and Kim Appleby; and great-grandchildren Justin Speizman, Isabella, Olivia, Madeleine, Pepper, Chandler and Catherine Appleby.


Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen D. Haines and the Rev. Martha Ballard officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rowan Memorial Park. Visitation: Following the memorial service.
