Mack Herbert Wood

SALISBURY - Mr. Mack Herbert Wood, 89, passed away on Oct. 18, 2010, at the North Carolina Lutheran Home.

He was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Salisbury, the son of the late Thompson Brown Wood and Esther Miller Wood. He was a graduate of Richfield High School and married Carrie Mae Goodman Wood on June 12, 1942.

Most important to him were the times spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his many friends along life journeys. His home was the gathering place for family celebrations with the children and grandchildren.

Mack was the owner of Wood's Auto in Spencer, which he started in 1947 and closed in 1986.

Mack was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was a past president of the James L. Fisher Sunday School Class, a Cub Scout leader and usher for many years. He was an active member of the Elks Club, Rowan Retired Peace Officers Club and Golden Opportunity Club.

Mack was a past member of Salisbury Merchants Association, Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He served as a Salisbury Police Reserve Officer from 1967-1986 and was director of the Police Reserves from 1981-1986. He was also a member of the Salisbury Bass Anglers Sportsman Society since 1969.

He is survived by wife Carrie Mae Goodman Wood; two sons: Tommie Wood and wife Sue and Gary Wood and wife Cathy; one daughter, Yonnie Holland and husband David; four grandchildren: T.J. Wood, Todd Wood, Jesse Holland and Carrie Sipe. Mack was the great-grandfather of Caleb and Taylor Sipe. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma Boulus.

Service and Visitation: A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday (Oct. 21) at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. A private inurnment will precede the service at the St. John's Memorial Garden and Columbarium. The family will receive friends in the Church Library following the Memorial Service.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., Salisbury, NC 28144 or the charity of the donor's choice.

Jack Plummer Safley Obituary:

SALISBURY - Jack Plummer Safley, 81, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at the North Carolina State Veterans Home.

Born July 4, 1929, he was the son of the late Flora Melinda Plummer Safley and David Frank Safley of Salisbury and was a lifelong resident of the city. On March 10, 1957, Mr. Safley married Barbara Ann Carter of Lincolnton.

Mr. Safley was a graduate of Boyden High School and was honored to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his professional career in sales with City Motor Company of Salisbury.

A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. Safley was also an active member of American Legion Post 342 and Salisbury Elks Lodge 699.

Mr. Safley was an avid sports fan and volunteered his services as general manager of the Salisbury American Legion baseball team for 15 years.

In addition to Barbara, his wife of 53 years, Mr. Safley is survived by daughter Anne Elizabeth Safley Bills and her husband, Andy Bills, of High Point; grandchildren Andrew Carter Bills of Charlotte, Elizabeth Asbury Bills and Mary Cullen Bills of High Point; sister Lois Mae Safley Miller of Statesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Service and Visitation: A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 at First United Methodist Church of Salisbury at 217 S. Church St. with the Rev. Stephen Haines officiating. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be sent to the Building Fund at First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church St., Salisbury, NC 28144-4953.
