Brother Paul Hinkle Sr passed away Nov 26


Paul Preston Hinkle, Sr., 90, of Salisbury, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2009 at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born September 28, 1919 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Emma Kate Leonard Hinkle and Hollis Leo Hinkle, Sr.

Mr. Hinkle was a graduate of Spencer High School, class of 1936, as Valedictorian. In 1940, he graduated from Wake Forest University, where his major was mathematics.

A veteran of the United States Army, he served from November of 1942 to February of 1946, as Captain, and received the American Campaign Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and Purple Heart.

His work history includes working as a teacher at Biltmore College, a Rowan County Veterans Service Officer, was the Register of Deeds for Rowan County, and Rowan County Postmaster for 27 years.

Mr. Hinkle was also in the Rowan County Lions Club and was the treasurer for Rowan County Veteran’s Council for over 50 years, and a member of the Elk’s Lodge, VFW Post # 3006.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Rebecca Agner Hinkle, who died June 23, 2002; son, Paul Preston Hinkle, Jr. on May 30, 2006; and sisters, Alma Whirlow and Elizabeth Lam.

Survivors include daughters, Becky Ann Hinkle of Salisbury, Jean Trexler of Rockwell, Sarah Riedel of Macon, GA; brothers, H. L. Hinkle, Jr. (Frances) of Spencer and James Ray Hinkle (Millie) of Pittsboro; 6 grandchildren, Preston and Laura Hinkle, Sasha Lathon, Erica Adams, Jacquelyn Spear and Carrie Walburn; 6 step-grandchildren, Bryan Trexler, Joel Trexler, Kristen Agner, John Waller, Ben Padilla and Audrey Kluge; 4 great-grandchildren, Trey Spear, Christopher Spear, Taylor Adams and Hollis Walburn.

He is also survived by his special friend and companion, Edith Crowell and many, many friends.

Visitation: 7-8:30 PM – Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Service: 3:00 PM – Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Oakdale Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richard A. Gross and the Rev. Robert T. Heard, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Rowan County Honor Guard.
